Secrets of Discipline

16 02 2013

As I stated I was investigating the area of classroom management for one of my final projects for a class this semester and so I thought I would provide some of my findings.

One of the things I have been obsessed with since my second or third year of education is finding books to help me in my teaching practices. A healthy but cautiously dangerous addiction. This is a result to the addiction, my closet at my parents house currently and this also demonstrates the extent of my OCD haha —>

When I started this project something I turned to was books for some information as to their thoughts on classroom management. A book that was recommended to me in my internship by a teacher I worked with after telling her my struggles with classroom management was called “Secrets Of Discipline for raising responsible children” by Ronald G. Morrish. She lent me the book however during internship there was no way I had time to read it, so I gave it back and forgot about it until this project came up. I had forgotten the books name and so I emailed the teacher and got the name and the next day ordered it. The point of my story is that the book came in the mail today and I have been reading it and it is as amazing as she said! NEW TEACHERS, FELLOW CLASSMATES/COLLEAGUES…. ATTENTION!!! If you struggle with classroom management or discipline you need to order and read this book. I say order because though it may be in a library you will want this for your collection.

The book offers common sense explanations but yet not common enough that people forget them. I have not completed the book but already I have many pages tabbed. It is worth the read. I am excited to finish it and learn more. So if you want a good classroom management book check this one out.

Classroom Management Project Update

5 02 2013

Well today is February 4th so it has been less than a month since I started my project on learning about Classroom Management. It is going, well slow, projects that are course long can sometimes easily get pushed to the back of your mind and this one definitely has. With life kicking me in the butt I thought I should probably get back on this band wagon and start er up again, it has NOTHING to do with the fact that my proposal for the project is due next week 😉

Since starting although slow I have made some progress. I have been checking out websites on classroom management as well as receiving tips and advice from classmates and thanks to twitter and this ECMP 355 class, all of you who read my tweets and blog, so just a quick thank you for all your contributions. What I thought I would do is share a few words as to what I have learned but I know that I learn best from links that I can check out and read and go through myself at my own pace, so I figure that there are more learners like me so I will provide ya with some of the links I found.

Hope you enjoy and maybe some of you will find my finding useful, I know I sure am.

A few words on my findings:

What I have been discovering is that the best classroom management tip is to include the students. Depending on the age level you are teaching this can be kind of tricky, however letting the students be included, I’ve learned, makes them feel as though what they say matters. It also makes them more likely to participate in the activity if they helped in the design of it. Same goes for rules.
